Healing Self Contempt (also known as Self Rejection)

Use the below information if you weren't in class or if you'd like to do this meditation again.

Context / Background

****To some degree, most of experience some doubt about God, His love, and our own worth from time to time. Some of this is because certain things you did or said, or didn’t do (early in life) didn’t seem to meet with approval.

Because of this, you felt angry at yourself for not being everything it took to get the love you needed. Making this even worse, this anger seemed to shut the door to heaven so that the greatest love of all, to some degree, was blocked.

According to Dr. Robert Holden, (before we started judging our self) we enjoyed ourselves. We even enjoyed looking at our self in a mirror! But later in life, as the crustiness of our self anger and self-contempt built, looking in the mirror seemed to stir more resistance that it did joy- precisely why it’s so important to do just that- look in the mirror and give yourself a chance to remember how you used to feel about yourself and to get more in touch with how God must feel for you.

The purpose of this meditation is to train your mind and spirit to accept your own self-love and God's love more fully.

Part 1 - Get with God

As convinced as you might be that you’re not “good enough” to be loved**,** God has a very different point of view. Tune into this for a moment, so you can look in the mirror like you “used to.” If God loves you, maybe you can too.

Step 2) On your knees or seated reverently, ask your Heavenly Father the following: • Are you there? • What do you feel about me? • Who am I to you?

Step 2) Consider His response. You may want to write whatever impressions come to you. Sometimes, if you’ll just start writing, your impressions will become a little more discernible. Sometimes your impression will not include words- it will just be an experience- like an opening inside.

Part 2 - Meditation

Tips: This can feel awkward at first and may take a few tries Tip: Don’t try to feel anything. Don’t try to psych yourself into believing that God loves you. Just be present to words of the meditation. That’s it! That’s all you do.

Step 1 - Listen to (or read) the meditation below (from our Mastery meeting).

Step 2 - Additional awareness

In front of a mirror: To create extra emphasis on the meditation above (while referring as needed to the script below, in blue), look steadfastly into your own eyes and read the following: • _______ (your name)God loves you, with an infinite, abiding love. He’s always loved you.   • He will always love you and as you feel after Him, so He is already feeling after you- wanting you to know Him as He knows you- wanting you to love Him as He loves you.Lift up you head _______ (address yourself by name again).Believe that He can and will meet you where you are and then lead You to where and who He is.You are worth this. Believe this.
You are and will always be infinitely lovable. You are and will always be enough.
